Understanding Your Timeline
Here's what your timeline means and why it matters.
What Does This Mean?
Your ovarian reserve is the total number of follicles (or eggs) remaining in your ovaries. You are born with all the eggs your body will ever have, and over time, this reserve naturally declines.
Typically a person starts with hundreds of thousands of them, but thousands are depleted with every menstrual cycle. Each cycle, a cohort of follicles begins to develop, but typically only one matures and is released — the rest are naturally reabsorbed.
Reproductive aging is described using the STRAW+10 criteria, the internationally recognized staging system for the menopausal transition.
Perimenopause
Perimenopause begins when there is a persistent difference of 7 or more days in the length of consecutive menstrual cycles. It's the natural transition phase leading up to menopause, where periods become more irregular and the body gradually produces less estrogen.
Menopause
Menopause is reached once you go 12 consecutive months without a period. At that point, the body's hormonal profile changes dramatically because the ovaries have largely exhausted their follicle supply and ovulation has ceased.
